An ultrasound of the heart, or echocardiogram, is the most useful test for evaluating the heart in animals suspected of underlying cardiac disease. The studies are non-invasive and most are completed without sedation. Diseases of the muscle wall, heart valves, pericardium (sac around the heart) and the pleural space can be readily identified. Patients that present with heart murmurs or arrhythmias (abnormal EKGs) are typically evaluated with this procedure. EKSs are part of our echocardiography studies and further able us to diagnose and treat diseases that affect the electrical component of heart function. Results from these studies are key in the long term management of our patients with heart disease. Additionally, results from echocardiography studies can provide immediate answers in emergency situations that may warrant more timely medical intervention:

  • Heart disease versus respiratory disease
  • Pericardial effusion
  • Heart base tumors
  • Pleural effusion
  • Pulmonary hypertension
  • Metastatic tumor spread to right atrium
  • Severe heartworm disease ( caval syndrome)
