Among the state of the art tools we employ at Jefferson Animal Hospital is a Laparoscopic Biopsy Unit. Laparoscopic surgery is increasingly being used in both veterinary and human medicine due to its many health and safety benefits. Currently we are using this unique equipment to obtain biopsies of polyps and tumors of the nasal passages, colon and ears. Many times these tumors/polyps are not amenable to surgery because of their location and difficulty of access. Our laparoscope can also be used to biopsy gastrointestinal tract, kidney, liver and pancreas.
This tool is useful as a less invasive procedure for visualizing the appearance of internal organs without having to make a full incision such as abdominal exploratory. Whenever we can provide a diagnosis without having to keep your pet under anesthesia for prolonged periods and without making full abdominal incisions, this has the benefits of less pain and faster recovery for your pets.
